The Mirrors It was a small, circular mirror. When Jake picked it up, he saw his crystal clear reflection, enhanced by the smooth, silver glass. He looked up out of the old boxes he was rummaging through to find the rest of his dimly lit garage. He could hear kids playing outside and he rubbed his hands together, trying to remedy the sting of the bitter, unrelenting cold. He picked up the mirror, and took it into his mansion of a house in a quiet, peaceful suburb. It was a Midwestern winter, and the days were short, bringing cold nights laced with the sounds of speeding cars flying down the highway. Jake heard the shrill call from his mother. "Jake, we're going to McDonald's. What do you want us to bring you back?" Jake thought about it a moment, and responded in his low, thick voice. "Im not hungry right now. Go ahead." "You really should eat!" she yelled back. He didn't respond. Instead, he went into his room, mirror in hand. Jake had long been obsessed with the paranormal, diving into books of ghosts, demons, angels, and reproductions of ancient cabalic documents. It was in these books that he learned of scrying, which is foretelling the future through the use of mirror glass. He remembered about the cool antique mirror graced with Celtic knotwork and a red runestone, and figured he would give the ancient art a shot. He opened up the book, looked at some procedures, and followed the instructions. He set out the fancy purple velour cloth on his desk and placed the circular mirror down upon it. He then eagerly looked into the book and slowly chanted the specified jargon in slow, broken Latin. With that, he blew out his candles, waiting as the book said, for the mirror's powers to unlock. Nothing happened. He got up from the chair in expectation that it wouldn't work, and proceeded to turn the lights on, when he was shocked by what he heard. It started off as a whisper barely audible, and as he listened in sheer terror it became louder and louder, till he could hear nothing else but the shrieking terror that plagued his ears. It reminded him of a dog growling as if it were intimidated, but this was much more low, and contained what could only be described as pure, clean, unadulterated evil.

The novel For Whom the Bell Tolls, written by Ernest Hemingway, is a story of passionate love throughout the brutality of the Spanish Civil War. Hemingway uses his personal experiences to portray the true meaning and feeling of this book. Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. The neighborhood he grew up in was straight-laced and rigidly Protestant. Hemingway started his literary career publishing his work in his school magazine. Later on in life, he signed up to join the military in World War II, but was rejected due to his defective left eye from birth. Instead, he enlisted in the Missouri National Guard and remained on the lookout for opportunities to progress to the front.†¦show more content†¦Lastly, â€Å"Hemingway’s inner experience of love, as it is portrayed in his novels, is a sense of basic trust and object constancy which could allow his hero to retain the feeling of intense love even after the beloved object is lost.†(#6 p.357). The love between Robert Jordan and Maria is intense and passionate and it parallels the love that Hemingway experienced. The genius style that Hemingway utilizes in this novel truly enhances the richness of the superb story. The various themes in this novel really give the story its depth and meaning. The theme of chaotic and brutal warfare is by far the leading theme, as it is in many of Hemingway’s novels. This novel’s version of this theme is the Spanish Civil War. Robert Jordan’s mission of this war is to demolish a bridge, which in the long run will help the Spanish Republicans in their goal of defeating the Fascist government. In several of Hemingway’s novels, the protagonist is a character of heroism and honor. These protagonists are tough, experienced in the hard worlds they inhabit, and not obviously given to emotional display or sensitive thinking. Robert Jordan is this type of protagonist and he is a humble, honorable man. There is â€Å"Some notion of honor that makes a man a man, and distinguishes him from people who merely follow their random impulses and who are by consequence messy.† (#3 p.40). Should We Interfere With The Natural Process - 845 Words

I have such a hard time with this topic. Reading all of these articles and watching these videos have genuinely put some things into perspective. These things are those of which I have never put much thought toward, if any. Should we interfere with the natural process? First I want to touch on the slide that Dr. Scott Rae presented from the Newsweek magazine. I do agree when he says that we are interfering with the natural process by waiting so long to have children, if we are physically capable. He briefly touches on the fact that women are waiting longer in life to have babies because they have things such as IUI and IVF to depend on. These women, usually celebrities, are waiting so they do not have to ruin their bodies at an early age and can continue a successful career while at a younger age. Now in this perspective, I do agree that the natural process should not be interfered with. In retrospect, the natural process, more or less â€Å"fails† for some people. For example, a couple struggling with infertility or with medical issues preventing the natural process to take place, seek out help from technology. This, in my opinion, is not interfering with the natural process. I do however agree with the the lack of importance people are putting on the embryos that are in storage. From a personal standpoint, these are indeed human life ready to be conceived, but unfortunately there are thousands upon thousands that will probably never have the chance.
