The madding crowd Essay The sheep washing shows how Boldwood never gives up hope. Even later in the novel, when Bathsheba has turned him down several times, he asks for her hand in marriage on Christmas Day, so they can marry five years after the death of Troy, which would make it legal. He is positive that she will say that she will marry him and she, not wanting to hurt his feelings, feels obliged to agree. After the shooting however, it all comes out just how desperate he is. The murder is enough to show but he also has a ring, which he has had since the first time he asked her to marry him. Many presents are also found addressed to Bathsheba Boldwood and it is clear from them that Boldwood was a troubled man, slightly insane because of his love of Bathsheba. At the Corn Exchange, Boldwood, who was itching to ask Bathsheba if he would consider marrying him, discovers that he cannot ask her yet. She receives news that Troy has drowned and she is instantaneously gloomy. Boldwood knows straight away that now is not the right time. He does however realise now that he is free to ask her at any point, because Troy is gone. His face flushed with the suppressed excitement of an unutterable thought, which means that he is plotting to finally get the woman of his dreams. Troys entrance has an overwhelming effect on Boldwood at the engagement party. Hardy reminds the reader of Boldwoods prior loss of Bathsheba, when he describes Tory as being, the impersonator of heavens persistency towards him, who had once upon broken in upon bliss, scourged him and snatched his delight away. The usage of those strong, and rather violent words such as, broken, scourged, and snatched further highlights Boldwoods painful suffering and foreshadows the violent actions to come. Boldwood is shocked, as is everyone else, about the sudden reappearance of Troy. Everyone thought that he was dead, so no one can quite believe it. Troy then tries to get Bathsheba to come home with him. Bathsheba doesnt move and Troy tries to pull her up, which is when Boldwood loses it. In a flurry of movement, screaming a smoke, Boldwood shoots Troy, who falls on the floor dead. Everyone is greatly shocked. Hardy then describes how Boldwood crossed over to Bathsheba, kissed her hand and, put on his hat, opened the door, and went into the darkness, nobody thinking of preventing him. No one probably stops him because it is such a sudden shock. This shows how insane Boldwood has become. In this novel, Hardy details often on the pain of love, and demonstrates to everyone the fact that love is not simple, and is a complex rollercoaster of emotions and there is more often than not more than two people involved. The two men are very different, but similar in some ways. Both are, obviously, bowled over by Bathshebas beauty and they are both highly respected gentlemen. They both display their emotions in very different ways however. Sergeant Troy can keep his feelings well under wrap, not really letting on to many people how he truly feels. Boldwood however, cannot contain his emotions as well as Troy, so therefore, goes insane because of his love, or even lust, of Bathsheba, which appears much stronger than Troys, who really prefers Fanny. Bathsheba is more inclined to be with Troy because he is a young, dashing solider. She gives Boldwood the cold shoulder because he is an ageing, boring farmer, who cannot add the spice to life that she requires. By Michael J. The Mirrors It was a small, circular mirror. When Jake picked it up, he saw his crystal clear reflection, enhanced by the smooth, silver glass. He looked up out of the old boxes he was rummaging through to find the rest of his dimly lit garage. He could hear kids playing outside and he rubbed his hands together, trying to remedy the sting of the bitter, unrelenting cold. He picked up the mirror, and took it into his mansion of a house in a quiet, peaceful suburb. It was a Midwestern winter, and the days were short, bringing cold nights laced with the sounds of speeding cars flying down the highway. Jake heard the shrill call from his mother. "Jake, we're going to McDonald's. What do you want us to bring you back?" Jake thought about it a moment, and responded in his low, thick voice. "Im not hungry right now. Go ahead." "You really should eat!" she yelled back. He didn't respond. Instead, he went into his room, mirror in hand. Jake had long been obsessed with the paranormal, diving into books of ghosts, demons, angels, and reproductions of ancient cabalic documents. It was in these books that he learned of scrying, which is foretelling the future through the use of mirror glass. He remembered about the cool antique mirror graced with Celtic knotwork and a red runestone, and figured he would give the ancient art a shot. He opened up the book, looked at some procedures, and followed the instructions. He set out the fancy purple velour cloth on his desk and placed the circular mirror down upon it. He then eagerly looked into the book and slowly chanted the specified jargon in slow, broken Latin. With that, he blew out his candles, waiting as the book said, for the mirror's powers to unlock. Nothing happened. He got up from the chair in expectation that it wouldn't work, and proceeded to turn the lights on, when he was shocked by what he heard. It started off as a whisper barely audible, and as he listened in sheer terror it became louder and louder, till he could hear nothing else but the shrieking terror that plagued his ears. It reminded him of a dog growling as if it were intimidated, but this was much more low, and contained what could only be described as pure, clean, unadulterated evil.

The novel For Whom the Bell Tolls, written by Ernest Hemingway, is a story of passionate love throughout the brutality of the Spanish Civil War. Hemingway uses his personal experiences to portray the true meaning and feeling of this book. Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. The neighborhood he grew up in was straight-laced and rigidly Protestant. Hemingway started his literary career publishing his work in his school magazine. Later on in life, he signed up to join the military in World War II, but was rejected due to his defective left eye from birth. Instead, he enlisted in the Missouri National Guard and remained on the lookout for opportunities to progress to the front.†¦show more content†¦Lastly, â€Å"Hemingway’s inner experience of love, as it is portrayed in his novels, is a sense of basic trust and object constancy which could allow his hero to retain the feeling of intense love even after the beloved object is lost.†(#6 p.357). The love between Robert Jordan and Maria is intense and passionate and it parallels the love that Hemingway experienced. The genius style that Hemingway utilizes in this novel truly enhances the richness of the superb story. The various themes in this novel really give the story its depth and meaning. The theme of chaotic and brutal warfare is by far the leading theme, as it is in many of Hemingway’s novels. This novel’s version of this theme is the Spanish Civil War. Robert Jordan’s mission of this war is to demolish a bridge, which in the long run will help the Spanish Republicans in their goal of defeating the Fascist government. In several of Hemingway’s novels, the protagonist is a character of heroism and honor. These protagonists are tough, experienced in the hard worlds they inhabit, and not obviously given to emotional display or sensitive thinking. Robert Jordan is this type of protagonist and he is a humble, honorable man. There is â€Å"Some notion of honor that makes a man a man, and distinguishes him from people who merely follow their random impulses and who are by consequence messy.† (#3 p.40).
